No New Posts   MY Honda almost Killed Me!

April 1, 2009

I was passing a large truck, downgeared into third gear, let out the clutch, and

the transmission popped out of third gear. I found myself in neutral facing on

coming traffic, and had to slam on my brakes and pull in behind the truck (almost

had a head on collision). This popping out of gear, and difficulty shifting into

gear has been going on for over a year and occurs perhaps 3 or 4 times a month.

After this near miss I decided to get it fixed. Before going to the dealer this

morning I did an internet search on "3 gear accord 6 cylinder manual" and one of

the results was Honda Service Bulletin 08-020. This bulletin covers my 07 Accord

and is for "Transmission Grinds When Shifting Into 3rd Gear, Pops Out of 3rd

Gear, or is Hard to Shift Into 3rd Gear, Note: These symptoms can be intermittant

and sometimes more noticable in colder climates. Faulty 3rd gear synchronizer or

shift sleve" Sounds exactly like my problem so I went to the dealer today to have

it corrected. The dealer went for a test drive and couldn't duplicate the problem

(it can go for over a week without showing up), he said Honda's policy was unless

they could see the problem Honda would not authorize any repairs to be made. I

called up US Honda (800 999 1009) and spoke to a Mr Jimmy Rudner who verified

what the dealer said. So Honda has found a problem with their transmission (the

one that almost caused me to have a head on collision), released a Service

Bulletin on how to fix it, but refuses to do any repairs until this 3 or 4 times

a month intermittant problem starts to fail often enough for it to fail while the

dealer is actually driving the car. Meanwhile the problem continues.

No New Posts   "educate" your children

April 11, 2008

And I would , but you and I are human and can understand the difference between what is and what is not socially acceptable, so I don't expect to have an opportunity to rub cayenne pepper into your eyes because I doubt you will climb all over my car and scratch it.A cat is just an animal, it doesn't know that you've paid $$$ for your car and value it more than your first born.On that note, would you "educate" your children or nephew and nieces with cayenne pepper when they wet their beds, or cry in the middle of the night, or won't turn off the TV when you tell them to?Anyway, I'd like to think the Smith and Wesson, the buckshot etc. are all tongue in cheek remarks, but some people just might be stupid enough to use cayenne pepper..........

No New Posts   beater car

April 11, 2008

what kind of animal lover thinks it's best to leave their cat ouside??? dunno.gif

in this instance, i wouldn't torture the cat. try torturing the neighbors! an air horn at ungodly hours would be sweet. or maybe spraying something cat-yummy all over their beater car. grab some catnip and sprinkle it on the beater. get the catnip bubble blow you can find in petstores and spray away on their car. try to make it more attractive to sit on that one. or better yet, grab some meat and run the juice all over their vehicle. i hear eggs make quite the mess on a car too. unfortunately they probably won't notice any additional damage done to their vehicle..... screwy.gif

car cover time for your car!!

i like the idea of calling animal control on them, but in some places it won't work because cats aren't required to be leashed or anything. and it could result in even worse for the poor kitty (if the shelter is a kill one in other words.....)

No New Posts   compressed air

April 11, 2008

My friends have two cats that love to climb over the counters, etc.

They bought basically a can of compressed air that has some type of sensor. Its seems like the emergency cutoff on a garage door.

Basically set that on top of your hood, and the can will spray air when the cat breaks the beam. I just scares them and it will learn its lesson.

Definitely go to a pet store and the people there will have something that will help you train that cat to stay off of your car.

No New Posts   constuction business

April 11, 2008

I had a similar problem when I lived in an appartment complex a very long time ago with a cat that used to sleep on my hood and leave prints and hair. I was working in the constuction business at the time and we used Tyvek sheeting as a vapor barrior in the homes being built. I used a large piece on my hood secured with a couple cheap magnets. The stuff is very 'stiff' and makes a 'crinkling' or 'crunching' sound (like a piece of mylar or plastic wrapping paper) which I suspect the cat did not like the sound of when it walked on the material since it kept it away for a while.

Maybe cellophane wrapping paper or some aluminum foil might do the trick?

No New Posts   How do you keep a cat off your car?

April 11, 2008

Hey guys,

...the fall season and its cooler temperatures are upon us, we live in a townhouse complex where a new family and their cat have moved in. The cat has decided that the top of my car is where it wants to sleep and keep warm, so each morning I'm greeted with gritty pawprints and cat hair all over the top of my Accord...
...any relatively humane suggestions of how to keep said cat off of my car?
...the new neighbors are not even remotely sympathetic of my cause, they are animal lovers and said I needed to consider living creatures over machines, they drive an old Dodge beater with faded paint and many layers of grime so I'm not going to get anywhere trying to get them to control their cat...

extremely agravated, but cheers anyway,

No New Posts   differences between models

April 11, 2008

Factory manual is 3X better than a Haynes or Chilton manual which are way too general in their instructions and they don't show all the differences between models, sedans/coupes, I-4/V-6 etc. The Helms factory manuals are usually about 2 inches thick just for one model and they are priced accordingly (no pun intended) smile.gif

No New Posts   DIY Water Pump Replacement

April 11, 2008

I have the Hayne's manual, and I was going to replace the water pump myself until I got to the part about removing half the engine (alternator, right-side engine mount, power-steering pump, engine drive belts, underside plastic protector, battery, etc.). My car has over 90K miles, and I would hate to pay someone to do this, but it seems too involved. Has anyone done this before? My car has been good to me, but should I just buck up and have this done?

BTW, it's a 2004 Honda Accord EX V6.

No New Posts   serice my Hondas

April 11, 2008

I didn't try to stick it to the second dealer, it's just that they serice my Hondas now that I have moved. I got upset because the first dealer dismissed my complaint of the pulling and the second dealer did initially as well until I asked them to test drive it again. The service mgr of the second dealer test drove it and reported that it definitely does pull left. mdnky, the car hasn't had an alignment yet but the second dealer claims to have put in on the rack and said everything was within spec, I asked for the print out but they could not produce one. The only thing that was "done" to address the issue was tire rotation and two road tests.Car pulls left regardless of load and/or passengers. Like I said, the car needs an oil change soon, it will also have an alignment done to see if that will solve the problem. Honda customer service blows.I submitted a complaint to the BBB yesterday and Marion Cooley, the district mgr called me today Now that's service... Distr mgr: Hello, Mr. Unhappy Customer. I'm calling to let you know, we are aware of the complaint to the BBB.Unhappy Customer: And....?Dist. mgr: We are still unable to offer you factory assistance at this time.Unhappy Customer: Bye.

No New Posts   keep good tire wear

April 11, 2008

The chance that an alignment issue is causing a pull on an Accord is very, very low. Even if it was, there are very few adjustments available for these cars to correct the issue (when compared to other mainstream cars) short of rebuilding the car itself. On the Accord, you align it mainly to keep good tire wear.

My first question to the original poster would be what were the specs for the alignment(s) that was done on this vehicle? Any decent shop will provide you with a printout of the before and after measurements. If you have those, lets see them.

Has the steering and suspension system been checked out? How was this done?

Also, what kind of load do you carry in your car and how evenly is it distributed? Does the severity decrease/increase or disappear when you have passengers or loads in the car?

No New Posts   Pay for a four wheel allignment to see if it cures the problem

April 11, 2008

I would have handled the situation more forcefully early on but that's neither here nor there so.......

It boils down to this:
1. Pay for a four wheel allignment to see if it cures the problem.
A. It's fixed, drive it, be happy.
B. It's not fixed, Drive it, sell it, trade it, or go after Honda.
C. Continue moaning and do nothing.

It's just that simple.
I hope things work out in your favor.

No New Posts   calling Honda to complain

April 11, 2008

Still lots of people not reading the whole story.

Summary for the lazy.

Tires have been moved so it's not the tires causing the pull.

Car has pulled from day one, so it's not a matter of me knocking it out of spec.

I have brought it in for the same complaint at least twice. So Stevel, every step has been taken prior to me calling Honda to complain and my actions were not pre mature. I'm the last person to make a stink if I don't have to.
I worked for a bmw dealer for almost 10 years and have pretty much seen it all. You know what's funny, from my experience, the people who are *******s get the best service. My problem was, I'm too nice and didn't push the first dealer enough but that's water under the bridge now.

I plan on keeping this accord for a long time so I will align it when it has to go in for an oil change but I will not buy another Honda after this or my Pilot. This is based on MY personal experience with Honda and Honda customer service.

You guys act like it is so outlandish that I want to defect to another brandlmao.gif

And yes, you did miss something.

No New Posts   my Mercedes-Benz

I'm pretty sure the tires have been rotated, and the tires are not the cause...I mean, he is past 12,000miles now, so he had at least two services, MINIMUM...they also adjusted the tire pressure from his message history...next step is to do an alignment...I think that is what he is arguing with Honda about...I say just pocket the alignment cost and save yourself the misery...I mean, my mother had to fork out over 10,000US to repair a faulty wiring harness in my Mercedes-Benz and all the other crap that was caused due to it...I think 90US is relatively painless by comparison...

No New Posts   warranty without moving the tires first

April 11, 2008

so....... I didn't read this whole thread but.... seriously? all this call honda, complain about dealers and the tires haven't even been moved around yet?

if I have a car in my shop with a pull. I won't even do an alignment on the owner's dollar out of warranty without moving the tires first.

it's step number one, with the exception of some kind of impact. i.e. curb, etc.

sounds to me as if the basics were ignored and the owner here went to step 6. being be an a$$hole prematurely. don't get me wrong. there are times to be an a$$hole. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. but......

or did I miss something here?

No New Posts   top notch alignment service...

April 11, 2008

If I were you, this is what I would do now:

Step back from the situation for a little bit. Calm down. Don't focus on the principle of making Honda come through for you... it may never happen.

Do the tire rotation thing yourself... doing it yourself will give you time to know the car better. Put the front wheels on the rear. The pull might stop. If any change in it's driving characteristics result, note it.

If the rotation does nothing, find a good place that offers a top notch alignment service... to hell with the little bit of money you will spend... have them align the car and have them explain to you, while they're working on it, how your Accord alignment works (adjustment points, etc.). If you tell them ahead of time what's going on, they will accomodate you. Be friendly, not bitter.

This is the best part... if the car drives true after the alignment, you can now rest easier. This will be the time where you can say "serenity now!" and move on. Your stress over this will disappear.

Whether or not you buy another Honda is your call. Personally, I don't drink the Honda Kool-Aid, I find lots of other cars desirable, so I wouldn't hesitate to look elsewhere for your next car. But until that time, you have to let go of the "Honda blows!" anger, and take control. Stop letting a car company decide whether you're happy or not.

Though the years, I have had products disappoint me, and if I've had a problem that couldn't be solved under warranty, I have paid to have someone reputable fix it, do it myself, or live with it 'til I can replace it. For me, it's only money... I always make more... and in a year's time (sometimes shorter) I will forget the problem I had in the first place. You will too.

BTW: cars are produced from the factory to track straight or eventually pull ever so slightly to the right, not the left. Why? Because they don't want cars to drift into oncoming traffic, but onto the shoulder. Just something to remember.

Good luck.thumbsup.gif

AccordED
I believe ya need to print out the TSB, and a copy of ya slip when ya brought the car in for service that shows when ya told them there is a problem...

And tell them.. FIX THE DAMN CAR!!!

I dont think its a problem with the frame, or a problem with the car being towed. Its a simple problem with Honda or their dealer body admitting they cant do a alignment properly.

Its not a matter of the car pulling to the right when the car is tracking on a curved road.

It is a matter of the car when its a straight and balanced road.. AND THE CAR STILL PULLS TO THE RIGHT. As for torque steer.. the dude is an &@*@(!(. Thats just plain B.S.

No New Posts   "busy" to look further

April 11, 2008

I think you revealed an opportunity missed. Being "right" or believing so does not make for an automatic win in resolution. From Honda's corp view, you're just somebody griping when a tech didn't agree or do what you said...I guarantee that's what the dealer/techs said when called for clarification from Honda. So they are walking away now feeling: I know Mr. Customer "feels" he's right but all credible review shows otherwise.Sounds like Honda Corp is basing everything on the "qualified" eyes of the personnel on hand...what else can they really do? If you would have convinced the tech to take a longer and more involved look at the issue...I think you would have had much more support. The leverage was getting someone openly recognized as an expert -- or best available alternative -- to provide insight to the car's condition and acknowledge the issue. As the customer, you were not considered particularly expert or unbiased, particularly after raising the stink which just let more air out of any credibility to the claim. I'm not saying what happened was right. It would have been "nice" for Honda to reply: "Since you've had three and know the makes pretty well, maybe we should tell the service boys to drive it longer and with time on the highway as described". But in the world of heaping outlandish claims mixed with legit ones, it would be hard to find a large company willing to take that much time and insight for each individual customer. At the dealer service level, that would have been the place to take issue...especially with the manner in which the problem was reviewed. If they were too "busy" to look further, on to the next Honda badged servie dept to assure you could find at least a group with some quality effort behind the service. And during say, a shared drive with a tech on the highway, you could stare face to face and say: "See that drift...describe to me if that's normal and if the other cars here are doing the same thing..." and "Why would this happen on this one and never on any other Accord I've owned." It tells that you do have some credible experience you're basing this on and it could at least be checked on a machine in return.Who knows now if this would have guaranteed better end results but it would have provided a lot more than he said/she said opinions.

No New Posts   manufacturer sells a car

April 11, 2008

Stll missing the whole picture Rtf. The car never tracked straight from the beginning. I brought it in at 6k and informed them that it pulled left on the highway. The tech most likely drove it up and down the street the dealer was located on and documented he could not duplicate the problem. In Honda's eyes, there never was and still isn't a problem because the tech said so. The dist mgr basically said, my car follows the crown and is not pulling and that is a characteristic of the accord, totally dismissing my claims. They will take a tech's word that drove my car for 2-3 mins over the customer's that drives it everyday for hours at a time. Am I in the twilight zone? If a manufacturer sells a car that is defective or needs repair, should the customer be held repsonsible? Again, at 6k, there was a problem, hell at 50 miles there was a problem, so I was under coverage at the time BUT since the tech could not duplicate the issue at the time, there was never a problem to Honda. They're hiding behind a technicality and she did say we don't have to cover it because we have proven documentation the car did not pull at 6K. If you had the conversation I had with Honda, you'd be damning them as well, trust me.I never said anything about trading my accord in but I did say I wouldn't buy another Honda and that still holds true. You act like it's totally insane for me to want to go with another brand. I've had troubles with 3 out of 3 Hondas that I've owned, it's time to move on.

No New Posts   I would agree that Hondas dealers over all suck

April 11, 2008

AccordEd

I did read the complete thread before posting.

I would agree that Hondas dealers over all suck. I feel very lucky to have a top notch dealer in both sales and service. And believe me. Ive spent more time at my dealer and a 2nd dealer than I ever wanted to with my Civic. And the Accord has had a few minor issues also.

But the fact still remains. Its more than likely a alignment issue. Atleast get it on a machine to see how it is right now. It will either be in spec or out or spec. If in spec. Dump the car! If out of spec. Get her lined up and enjoy.

I had to fight with Honda over a ECU in my Civic. It got nasty. But in the end I got a new ECU and my mpg back. But it did sour me.

And I am looking forward to dealers wanting to deal on the 1 series in late 2009 or 2010. smile.gif BMW's do have there own way behind the wheel.....

You have carried this out to WAY beyond the minor fixes that would have immediately corrected the situation. It is all so far out of proportion that your gripes are both preposterous and humorous. I'm not surprised. Like I said, this has shown me what kind of company Honda is, they aren't worried about customer retention or satisfaction. If I was a dist mgr for Honda and a loyal customer told me he is so dissatisfied that he is going to switch brands, I would eat the $90 alignment, it's a drop in the bucket for them.

No New Posts   2 Pilot EX-L RES's

April 11, 2008

Well, got a call back from Honda corporate today, Marion Cooley, a district manager said they have to deny my claim. She said, at 6K, The first dealer
has on record that the car was not pulling rather just following the crown.
So since I'm over 12k, they can't cover it. Basically got no where, she just reiterated everything from our first conversation.

We went in circles for about a half hour, no lie. I asked her, all bs aside, When you buy a new car, wouldn't you expect it to drive STRAIGHT? She, said, I can't comment on that at this time. She just kept throwing
canned repsonses back at all my questions like I was talking to a robot.

I'm honestly shocked that Honda has decided to treat a loyal customer in this way. This is my third Honda, all of which are higher models, 2 Pilot EX-L RES's and an Accord EX-L. I just think it's bad business. It's cheaper to keep existing cutomers than to gain new ones, they should know that.

Before we ended the call I asked her so you're ok with the fact that you're losing a loyal customer over a $90 alignment? She said I can't comment on that at this time. This experience has shown me what kind of company Honda is and has made up my mind to move to another brand.

F*ck it, I'm buying another bmw, at least my 19 year old 325is drove straight.

April 11, 2008

You think? It's always a shame these "business" people don't know how to do business. My best dealing was with a landscape contractor who did not ask for any deposit up front, I didn't argue as I figure I have the upper hand when I still have my money. At the end I was very happy and asked him why everybody else wanted 30-50% deposit and he didn't? His answer was very profound, he said "I want my customer to be so happy after the job is done that they would WANT to pay me".I then asked if he ever had ever been stiffed, he said in 25 years one person declared bankrupcy on him and didn't pay, and another woman claimed the work wasn't done right even after he had "fixed" the non-problem twice, he finally sent her back a cheque for the full amount of the job and with an apology letter that he "regret" that he couldn't meet her expectation.Guess what, the woman was so embarassed that she sent the cheque back to him to say that actually he did a wonderful job.Why couldn't all business treat their customers like this?

No New Posts   Not a good look for GB Honda

April 11, 2008

Update...

A district manager called me today. She wanted to clairfy what happened at both dealers. She also said she called Grand Blanc Honda and asked for the service manager, he was out to lunch, meanwhile I told her the service advisor told me yesterday that he was out for the whole week. Not a good look for GB Honda.

She also said, she would not be able to warranty the work but rather good will it which is what I mentioned to GB Honda yesterday. I should be getting a definite answer on friday. She said this is a pretty cut and dry case.

If they good will this, I won't be going back to this dealer for any more work, I'd rather drive to the next city. I don't feel comfortable leaving my cars in their hands especially after their advisors lied to me. They'll probably have some resentment towards me as well after I told the dist mgr how I was treated. I didn't hold back trust me.

No New Posts   parts and service advisor

April 11, 2008

HCF, sorry if I sounded like a dick but I'm just frustrated about the situation.

Anyway, I called Honda of Grand Blanc today, spoke with the service advisor that "helped" me last friday. I told him I have service records in hand showing that I brought the car in at 6K with the pulling problem. He told me there was nothing he could do and the service mgr was away for the whole week. I asked him if he could work with me and he said he doesn't have the authority and there was nothing he could do because I'm over 12K. We kept going in circles, finally he said I could call Honda corporate, I asked him for the number and he said, it's in your manual. Blew me off big time, what a douche.

Man, I used to work for BMW for almost 10 years as a parts and service advisor and I used to go out of my way to help people. We had ways of pushing warranty claims through for special instances like this. Also if I couldn't take care of the customer, I would talk to the service mgr and he would take care of it, NOT just tell the customer to call BMW. icon_thumbsdown.gif

I called Honda corporate and told them exactly what happened and he documented the situation, names of the dealers and the names of the service advisors who "helped" me. Does not look good on the dealers especially the second one who told me, to f**k off basically and call Honda myself.

A district manager will call me tomorrow. The rep was surprised that the service advisor referred me to Honda corporate so quickly and wouldn't even provide me with the number.

The dealer is jerking me off over a $90 alignment job. I can't wait to slam them in the customer satisfaction survey. Bye bye bonus moneywave.gif
