Actually I had the $500 option of 60/40 split folding seats on my erstwhile '99 540i, and altho I admit to using the utility of that feature a couple of times, there was also the issue of multitudinous squeaks that came from those stupid seats. You'd think a $56k MSRP car wouldn't have this problem, but it was pretty bad on bad residential roads. At highway speeds it faded into the ambient noise.
There was no E-Z fix either, other than loosening some bolts, aligning things as well as possible, and then tightening the bolts back down at one end of the bolt hole tolerance. Neither WD-40 nor copious amounts of silicone spray could touch the annoying squeaking. I was WAY out of warranty too, so I had no help from the dealer.
So maybe Honda did us a favor by eliminating all of the extra joins and pivot points (potential squeak generators) of 60/40 seats?
