RPMs for different engines
Permalink

Powerbands = Each engine has a power profile where as RPM increases the HP and TORQUE incease up to a point, then falloff as the engine reaches its maximum RPM (Redline). Note, this may not be the redline indicated on the tachometer. The HP and TORQUE ratings that are quoted are the maximum output, thus they are at different RPMs for different engines. How quickly the engine "ramps up" that power greatly influences the feel and performance of the engine. Also, the transmission gearing influences the feel as you move through the gears, in both manual and automatic models, to hopefully keep the engine operating in its "sweetspot". This power output is often depicted with a graph, but lately it seems Road & Track is the only magazine that is interested in publishing such meaningful information. The larger displacement engines (big V-6s and medium and large V-8s) usually have an abundace of both TORQUE and HP to get you rolling and accelerating. Sometimes there is no replacement for displacement.
