If you cant seem to get honda to fix it, you might try looking for one of these... http://www.gsp9700.com/pub/features/StraightTrak.cfm

I had to have my replacement tires roadforced due to vibrations... fixed what 4 separate dealer attempts couldn't accomplish. I was surprised how many dealers have the machines so if you get really lucky you might find a honda place that has one... (the have a search on their page)

Also if the dealer cant do anything call american honda.

No New Posts   general maintience

April 11, 2008

Waste of time. You're going to try and argue for a free alignment? It is crazy to own a car and not expect tires, oil, alignments, any general maintience. One good pothole could have knocked you're toe angle out thousands of miles ago. The dealer also most likely did not drive it at highway speeds and the pull would be less pronounced at slower speeds. 50 bucks for an alignment, consider it an early christmas present to yourself. If you live near to a firestone store, they charge 150 bucks for lifetime alignments, if you plan on keeping the car for more than 3 alignments.. it pays off.

Best of luck.

No New Posts   very lenient with warranty issues

April 11, 2008

I have to dig up the record in my files, I definitely brought it in before I hit 12k. I called the first dealer that I brought it to for the pulling issue, a service advisor printed out all of my records and sent them out to me. She said, from her experience, Honda will NOT deny a warranty claim such as this and told me Honda in general is very lenient with warranty issues.

No New Posts   Instead of having to request the service record

April 8, 2008

AccordEd, did you not keep your receipt from the first time you brought it in. Instead of having to request the service record, you could have shown your receipt to the service advisor. I keep all records, no matter how minor. Shoot, I keep receipts of when I buy oil/oil filters/air filters/etc.

Anyways, hope you get it resolved soon.

No New Posts   repair for the collision damge was completed

April 8, 2008

This is entirely possible, my dad was in a car accident with minor front end damage, the &^%$F# tow truck driver tied the rear end down so hard on the flat bed truck that he bent one of the rear trailing arms.My dad drove the car home from the collision shop after the repair for the collision damge was completed, and immediately noticed the car pulled to one side and needed about 10 degrees of steering wheel input to keep the car going straight, I took a drive and confirmed something was quite wrong and brought the car back to the collision shop. The owner of the shop was really baffled as he saw no damage to the front end suspension components from the minor collision, we then walked around the car and both him and I noticed immediately one of the rear wheel had a noticeable toe-out compared to the other rear wheel. The rear trailing arm was replaced at the towing company's expense.

No New Posts   pulling

April 8, 2008

road design does have a lot to do with the way the car tracks.
test your car on a level road
this might not be your problem, but
on edmunds town hall, people with the same problems have found that some front ends have been damaged in transport
seems it has to do with the way the cars were tied down
do some research it might help

No New Posts   repair under warranty

April 8, 2008

Dang, that sucks!! I'm sorry that you have that problem. AS for the warranty period, they're right. Anything that is wear and tear and alignments are warrantied for 12/12k miles. But make them do that repair under warranty because you brought it in with the exact same problem before your warranty ended. Also call the AHM hotline and complain.

No New Posts   the road sloaps/drains

April 8, 2008

Interesting but my car pulls left no matter what lane I'm in. I could be in the far right lane where the road sloaps/drains but it still drifts to the left. When I first bought the car, I had the same attitude as you, I just figured that it was normal. I had nothing to compare since this was my first accord. My Pilot damn near drives itself but the accord, forget it, if I let go of the wheel in the left lane I'd end up in the weeds. Makes me think I should have bought a Camry SE.

No New Posts   The steering wheel was dead straight ALL the time

April 8, 2008

I have the same problem, and I've come to the understanding that it's the way the roads are and how sensitive Accords are to the slope of the road. I offer the following insight:

I move a lot. When I first got the car, I lived in Baltimore and Boston. In both places, the roads are sloped and the car exhibited this problem. And the problem showed itself more on certain roads. I was so frustrated since I had just bought the car.

Then, I moved to Southern California and had the car shipped there (where it NEVER rains and the roads aren't sloped). The steering wheel was dead straight ALL the time.

Eight months later, I moved back to Boston. I had the car shipped. The car is now doing the same thing, so I contend that it has to be the car's sensitivity to sloped roads in areas known to have heavy precipitation (rainfall, etc.).

In between all this, I never had a car alignment. I had a balancing done some time after I moved to CA.

No New Posts   resurfacing under warranty

April 8, 2008

Definitely give them some ****. You did, in fact, bring it in before for the same problem which was not resolved. When you call the people on the phone, you will probably get sort of a first line of defense, or rather, someone who has no idea what is going on and serves the function of being more of a buffer than anything. That was my experience when trying to get my brake rotors sorted out. I didn't have the heart to chew the kid I was talking to on the phone out, and that's pretty much what would have been required to even get a resurfacing under warranty, which is ridiculous imo given that I had under 20k miles of very careful braking on the car.

Chances are that if it pulls that you have a tire issue, otherwise I can't think of anything probable other than your steering wheel being a little crooked. Most people like to swap the tires across the front to determine this, I now prefer to swap front and back tires. My snows had a pulling issue. The car pulled the same way when two of the tires are on the front, regardless of which is on the right or left side. Only when I move them to the back did the pull really stop. Maybe doing that before you talk to honda will help you resolve the issue as you will know what the problem is, or at least where it isn't.

No New Posts   Honduh blows> long rant

April 8, 2008

My car pulls or drifts to the left on highways regardless of what lane I'm in. It's been doing it from day one. At first I thought it was just following the crown in the road and since this is my first accord, I thought it was normal. Well about 6 months ago, I got tired of it and brought it in to have a Honda dealer look at it. I get a call saying, the car tracks fine, they adjusted the tire pressures and it's all set. I mentioned the drifting tsb but they said they didn't have the tools to diagnose it. Car still pulled after I left the dealer. wtf

Well, I brought it in again today to a different dealer because I moved. I get a call an hour after I dropped it off, the advisor said, the tech didn't notice any pulling and they adjusted the tire pressures so it should be fine now. He said, " There is also this thing called torque steer, when you accellerate.....blah blah" I cut him off and said, I know what f'in torque steer is. I told him the car drifts at highway speed when I dropped it off, how is that in any way related to torque steer?

The servce advisor said he would test drive it again and call me back. The service manager ended up test driving it and reported that the car did infact pull left. The bad news is Honda only covers work such as alignments up to 12,000miles/12monthsicon_thumbsdown.gif I'm well over that. Wtf? What pisses me off is that I did bring it in before 12K and the dealer blew me off.

I requested my service records stating that I did bring the car in before 12K and this was the second time a Honda dealer looked at my car for the drifting problem. I'm going to contact corporate Honda about this. I shouldn't have to pay out of pocket for an alignment. F-Honda

Probably my last Honda.

No New Posts   Bought the HID kit for my bike

April 8, 2008

Bought the HID kit for my bike, cheap kit, 13k miles and light is always on. I turn bike on and off alot, sometimes the HID even turns on without bike being on which i heard is bad for the unit, and still no problems at all.

So the cheap kits aren't bad at all!

Spent 20$ on bulbs for my high beams in honda, not even a month later one bulb done, here goes another 20$, that = 40$, should just get HID"s but i know its not smart for high beams, specially since they have the DRL settings....

My point is this, many times you pay for the name, but sometimes you get what you pay for. Its hard to tell unless you see reviews first.

No New Posts   In the PnP install

April 8, 2008

I was too eager to put the kit in and power the lights up, plus it is really cramped for taking pictures so I didn't bother dragging out my big pro DSLR camera and flash etc.The magnetic stuff is what I had left over from years ago to make up magnetic numbers when I was doing some grass-root level racing, I bought them in sheet form, the double sided tape I use is actually an adhesive "film" by 3M, we had lots at work so I used a bit of excess cut-off to stick the magnetic sheet to the bottom of the ballast. I would supsect arts and craft shops maybe where they can find them these days. It's really quite simple and straightforward, although I have to admit I got this idea from some small electronic boxes we bought at work, they came with a thin steel tray that can be fastened to the mounting surface by screws, but the box themselves have the magnetic sheet material underneath so they can be installed and removed quite easily .In the PnP install, I placed each ballast where I can found a horizontal flat surface of the chassis (in this case it was the energy absorbing beams the front bumper shocks are attached to), then routed and bundled the cables to existing cable bundles, hoses etc. in such manner that the cables helped the ballast stay in the general area, and the magnetic material further keep the ballast stay in place against the steel surface, works out quite well as the ballasts have stayed in place over the past few months!

i didn't put them in any particular order ... or by cost or history in the optics industry...

it was just what came to mind when people are asking about kits that tend to last and get good marks on forums ...ranging from very high end .. philips and hella ..down to the mid grade 'bargain' brands.... prolumen, mcculloch , mtec

if u have the money , and went with hella, philips ...usually the route of retro'ing in oem projectors w/ ballasts..d2s bulbs for example is the better way and only way to completely have true philips or hella..they don't support or make PNP kits as some will claim they do (just the parts folks use to piece *some* of the kits together that are sold as pnp

No New Posts   performance aspect of the HID PnP kit

April 8, 2008

If you want functionality, go with 4,300K or at least at no more than 5,000K, as the lumens (illumination intensity/strength) actually decreases as the color temperature increases.

If you want look than go with as high a color temperature as you want, but be forewarned that you will loose illumination strength, so why bother spending the money in the first place?

I have the 4,300K and could not be happier with the functionality and performance aspect of the HID PnP kit (even though it's in a 7 Gen).

No New Posts   high voltage charge that the unit holds

April 8, 2008

I've posted this before but never received an answer. A poster in the Acura group had a good question and wanted to know the answer. In the Acura TL owners manual it states that if your HID bulb burns out, you need to take it to the dealer due to the high voltage charge that the unit holds. How exactly can someone take the bulb out without frying themselves? Latex Gloves? I also see that the bulbs for the TSX are $150 each, Yikes!

No New Posts   the real key is finding a kit the was actually MIJ

April 8, 2008

you might find this helpful

http://www.hidkits.net/help/best-hid-kit/

I was able to track down a authentic MTEC h11 6000k kit through a friend of a friend for 135$ shipped...usually they retail online for 250$+ ...

the real key is finding a kit the was actually MIJ (Made In Japan) or Hong Kong... China made kits seem prone to more failure in the ballast/rebasing but don't take my word as being fact by any means. If you don't mind rolling the dice and just want the cheapest of the cheap, go right ahead..at the prices they're at, you can just buy another kit and still have spent less than what McCulloch or MTEC , etc etc kits go for but you can't get too pissed if the arc/bulb output starts flickering , or a weak light creeps up on you after a month or so of use...

No New Posts   HID Kits vs Bulbs....

April 8, 2008

Has anyone installed these cheap "knock off PIAA" bulbs in past or present cars? I installed a couple H1s in my old Prelude, they gave off a decent "xenon-HID-type" look, without hassle & evasiveness/warrant issues of HID conversion kit. Not as bright but decent.

Thinking of installing these in new Accord instead of conversion kit. They are pretty cheap and most online dealers places offer life-time warranty.
What you guys think?

No New Posts   The cold is the other big variable

April 8, 2008

The cold is the other big variable. I mentioned previously that it is around 10 degrees here and may get down to 10 below this weekend. And you're not the first who has mentioned that it gets worse in the cold. Next week I'm going to try to find a good near-by mechanic who works on a lot of Accords and see what they say. Then off to a dealer if I still have concerns. Frankly, my larger concern right now is that I love this car so much that I'm already working out a plan for moving up to an 07/08. My wife and I set a budget of 13K for a second car to replace my Ford Exploder (main car is an 07 Sienna) and picked up the Accord for exactly $13K including the aforementioned warranty. We paid cash, but now that I see how cheap you can pick up an 07 I'm starting to wish we had financed a bit in order to get a brand new one off the lot. It really is a great car, fun to drive, excellent interior, good gas mileage, historically as reliable as it gets, and very well priced. I love the Passat, some of the Saabs and Audis, but no other car in the class seems to come even close when you combine all the factors. I doubt it is the greatest in any single area but combined, what a car.

No New Posts   based on your description, it sounds normal

April 8, 2008

You could try taking the car to a dealer (call first) and see if they offer safety inspections. Some dealers will do this for free, where they go around the car and look for potential problem areas. Not sure if Honda does it, but most Volvo dealers will. Its a cheap way to promote service sales and it takes very little time for them. Some I've seen (a Chevy dealer, a Toyota dealer) charge a minor fee of $10 to $25. Or take it to the mechanic you trust if you have one.

Ask them if it feels rough to them. If you ask that at Honda, chances are you'll be asking someone who has been in many of these cars. If they say its normal, it probably is.

To be honest with you, and based on your description, it sounds normal. I've driven and ridden in quite a few Hondas over the years and all have had some kind of vibration, though its what I would call very faint on most. Even my new one (43xx miles now) has some at idle in neutral. It's more noticable when cold, but there's always a bit there regardless.

They're (Hondas) great cars, but they're not luxary cars. They're built to be dependable and practical first and foremost. A little vibration isn't a major concern with those features in mind. Even some high-end BMWs I've driven have had minor vibrations (though those were usually M models and most had an I-6 engine.)

BTW...if you really want to clean out the injection system, have it professionally done. The stuff you buy at the autoparts store is pretty lame compared to what most shops use. I know Sears does it for about $60 to $70 on most vehicles and I'm sure others are similarly priced.

No New Posts   Auto Parts stores all have it

April 8, 2008

Bowzer and others have a damn good point here. Only YOU can say if this is out of line or not. Go with your gut.......there are other dealers than the one you bought it from, which sounded to me like a used car dealer not a Honda dealer. If it's enough of a problem that you feel there is a need to pursue it then do so. After reading and re-reading your posts it's possible that the rough idle is more than the norm and requires that something be done/corrected.

I still think this is worth a shot though, enough for 20 gallons not 12. Pep Boys, Wal-Mart, Auto Parts stores all have it. Can't find the 20 gallon size? Buy two 12 gallon treatments and use 2/3 of the second bottle. Put the final 1/3 in your next tank. It cannot harm and has cured idle problems for me before in other vehicles.

No New Posts   "slight" vibration through wheel

April 8, 2008

You have to be careful when describing vibration issues as I have not driven a singl;e 4 cylinder that I couldn't feel "slight" vibration through wheel. This is totally normalwith a auto at idle. when in neutral or slightly above it should disapate to nothing.

Also a passanger shouldn't really feel this without touching wheel, stick or other part of frame.

in general small 4 cylinder (under 2L) are smoother on avg cause of less mass and small stoke, this is were engines like honda 2.4L and may others use balance shafts to smooth out these large 4 cylinders.

You really should only feel slight vibration in wheel, brake pedal, the frame should be pretty smooth. It sounds like your just not familiar with 4 cylinders.

No New Posts   '04 models only - I know that my '05 didn't "qualify"

April 8, 2008

If I remember correctly, the TSB replaced the front motor mount, and 2 of the bushings holding the radiator in place. I also think it applied to the '03 and some '04 models only - I know that my '05 didn't "qualify". Whether the TSB fixed the problem seemed to varied depending on the person. If it really was a mount issue, and the vibration was "more than normal", then it likely fixed it. But for those with "normal" vibration level, it did nothing to help it out. Again, "normal" is something you'd have to figure out for yourself by comparing with others.

In terms of the steering wheel visibly vibrating - I actually could see that "shake" in the worst of vibrations when mine was new - and others did it as well. But it's not like shaking up 1/2" then down 1/2" - but rather the shake to the level that you'd get ripples in a water bottle. It can be unnerving since you're expecting complete isolation from the motor itself, but with a 4cyl of this 2.4L size, the idle is what suffers. In my case, once you brought the RPM's up above idle level, even only 100 rpm above, it became smooth as silk. That's how I knew it was just the nature of the beast...

No New Posts   36mo/38K extended warranty from GWC

April 8, 2008

Yep, in fact it is a 36mo/38K extended warranty from GWC. The problem is the small, indy dealer who sold it to me already thinks it is normal and sold it to me as such. So I may have a hard time convincing him but hopefully the TSB will help. There were no other Honda's on his lot to compare but he claims he goes through a ton of them and they all vibrate. In fact, when I pressed the issue during the sale/test drive he related a tale about another customer who kept insisting the same thing and said he finally made her get in three different Hondas to prove it to her. He was convincing enought that I bought the car, but it also means he is predisposed to thinking this is not a problem.I think my plan is to find a good local mechanic who works on a lot of Hondas and have them take a look. I'll bring the TSB and if they think it is issue I'll get an estimate and then push it with the dealer . . .

No New Posts   Honda dealer or a good import garage

April 8, 2008

"It would shock me if the car came off the lot like this in 2003 because nobody would buy it..."

Good point. A bouncing steering wheel at idle is not normal. I would take it today to a Honda dealer or a good import garage and let them see it. Didn't the used car place give you a 30 or so day warranty? If so, and even if they didn't, you might convince them that there is a problem if you have an estimate from a Honda dealer. FWIW my 2002/4cyl/auto with 56K miles doesn't vibrate like you describe. I test drove an older 4cyl Volvo a few months ago that vibrated hard at idle, but it had obviously worn engine mounts and a backfire.

No New Posts   All 4 of my Honda 4 bangers had some version of the slight vibration

April 8, 2008

I agree with the notion of driving other like cars. If you have a Carmax nearby, that can provide a few quick examples, too. I'm so accustomed to the vibration that I have to drive something else for a while before I even take note about it. All 4 of my Honda 4 bangers had some version of the slight vibration.

WHen I do take note of it, a ride that took place with my Grandfather in my first Honda comes to mind from years back. He loved my "little hatchback" and on the first ride as we idled fr a streetlight to change, he looked over and said "Purrs doesn't it?". Somehow that helps me anyway.

EDIT: Just saw your last post: I never had the need for the mount re-do. If you feel it's excessive, go ahead and push with the TSB and list the fact you've been in other Honda's already...maybe not as many as the service guy(s)...but this is your car after all and it doesn't feel like the others you've been in.

No New Posts   "excessive noise and vibration"

April 8, 2008

Thanks for the advice guys, had never heard of that additive and good to know that I probably don't have anything to worry about.

If anyone is still reading this, have YOU had your front engine mounts replaced as recommended by the TSB and did it help?

The TSB recommends it for "excessive noise and vibration" and even without trying out other cars I'm 99% sure mine falls into that category. I've been in plenty of Accords as a passenger/guest driver over the years and would remember if any of them sounded or felt similar. The only car that comes close to it is a VW GTI diesel that my sister used to own.

My conundrum is that my dealer/warranty provider already insists that this is completely normal, and thus will likely resist any efforts to do the work even if I provide the TSB. The warranty is provided by Guardian Warranty Corp. -- they are not fly-by-night but they do have a long history of fighting legit claims and bad customer service. (It was included in the price of my car, which was lower than similar cars with no warranty and higher miles so I figure anything I get out of it is better than nothing.)

Roughly how much does it cost to replace and/or adjust the mounts anyhow?
