From the January 2008 issue of C & D .... the Accord continues it's winning streak for 2008 along with a few surprise newcomers.
Here's the cars that made it:
HondaAccord Coupe and Sedan Honda Fit BMW 3 Series Cadillac CTS Chevrolet Corvette Chevrolet Malibu Mazda MX-5 Mazdaspeed 3 Porsche Boxter and Cayman Volkswagen GTI
They said that the Accord's steering "Cuts with a sharpness that is unique among family sedans and carves a path so accurately that you can position the car exactly where you want it. The Accord's brakes and shifter are similarly precise and satisfying." For those with a more sporting bent, the Accord also comes as a two door with unique (and very attractive) sheetmetal and a V-6 combined with a six speed manual. All told, it adds up to one more in a terrific line of cars that have captured a record 22 10Best trophies since we started awarding them in 1983."
In the 18 years that I have been reading Car and Driver cover to cover and can't recall many (or any) GM sedans ever making the cut, so seeing two on the list was surprising. Personally, I think that the CTS is a great design, inside and out. I also think the same of the new Malibu. But I think that Chevy has a long way to go before they are able to pull the hearts and minds of most import intenders' into their dealerships ... especially if you are used to Honda's usually friendly and heavily CSI driven, as opposed to $$ driven service departments. One of the things that would lift the Chevy immediately would be a name change . The name "Chevy Malibu" conjures up images of a cheap a** rental car in my mind. Out of the hundreds of thousands of employees at GM, there has to be someone that can think of a better name. Maybe the Chevelanche or just spell it backwards ... Ubilam ... I don't know. Anything would be better than Malibu. It will take a long time, but both cars are excellent efforts from the General nonetheless.
