RE: 2008 Accord 4 Cylinder Knock Sensor False Detection

Last week Honda Motor Co. issued an iN message to the dealer network announcing a Pre Delivery Update Campaign for both Sayama and HAM-produced 2008 Accord 4 cylinder models. The message contained a link to the software patch download and installation procedures. The supporting Service Bulletin was placed online Friday morning, 9/7/07.

Today 9/10/07 the 2008 Accords will begin shipping from the railhead to your dealership. If your dealership did not review the iN message previously issued, please refer to the remainder of this message and review the iN message issued by the Tools Group regarding the software required for this update.

Under this campaign all affected vehicles must be updated PRIOR TO SALE.

Basic Problem

Some 2008 Accord 4 cylinders may experience an intermittent lack of power during acceleration due to interference/noise with the knock sensor signal circuit. Interference or noise on this circuit can cause the PCM to retard the ignition timing, causing a decrease in engine power, usually during acceleration.

Supporting Materials

A Service Bulletin was issued 9/07/07. The Bulletin details the repair procedure and warranty reimbursement information. The software patch required to reflash the control unit was sent to the dealer network on 9/5/07.

Note: The new software version (V6.09.04) must be loaded to the HDS Tablet before the control unit can be successfully updated.

Campaign Parts

This campaign only requires a software update to the engine control unit. No parts are required.

Repair Strategy

Initial 2008 Accord L4 vehicles being shipped to your dealer will require updating.

Cars currently at the port are being repaired before delivery to the dealerships. A red adhesive dot is applied to the left rear quarter glass to indicate the update was applied to the car. Later this month a permanent countermeasure will be applied on the production line at Sayama. HAM applied a permanent countermeasure this week. The Sayama countermeasure VIN will be broadcast to the dealers when it is available. Once the permanent countermeasure has been applied, the factories will discontinue applying the red adhesive dot.
