You are right. They are under no legal obligation to do the repair. The Government cares mostly about safety issues, because they are, well, safety issues.However, I do think that it's bad to have something fail consistently across the board outside of warranty and do absolutely nothing to make it right.I mean, things fail but this is consistent and definitely seems to be a design flaw. From what I've seen this is not an isolated incident. So why should the customer be responsible for an error on Honda's part?I can think of similar cases - iPods and their rechargeable batteries that died after 18 months. They sealed it and made it difficult to open effectively forcing you to buy a new one when the battery failed. It caused so much bad publicity for Apple that they were forced to provide a battery replacement program. At $59, it's not cheap, but it's not bad either.
