This, in my not so humble opinion, is inexcusable in this day and age. Lighting sysems for LCD screens are child's play - no valid reason why Alpine (or whoever is OEM'ing to Honda) can't design a more reliable system. I work in aerospace - trust me when I say that this sort of thing would have a bunch of folks in a snit if it happened to one of our units. "Oh, sorry, we have to replace the entire overhead console in your C-17 since one of the display lights malfunctioned...that will be $325k please." Scale of economies and all that - but similar to telling the owner of a $20-30k car he has fork over $1200 to replace the entire head unit in order to fix a $3 bulb.
If there is indeed a widespread problem with the display lighting, Honda is responsible for seeking corrective action from their supplier in order to remedy any customer complaints. Extended warranties should not be needed for this sort of thing - blown speakers, yes. Head units on stereos in less than 5 years, no way.
