My '77 Accord hatchback had these slots also and the ignition key did reset them. I'd read that owners manual cover to cover, it may have the reset procedure in a section other than maintenace, like the dash lights and indicators section. If I remember correctly, you pressed the key in a bit, but it's been a lonnnggg time ago.
And they could be reset before reaching red status.
