Take a look at my thread in the gallery. This car has been meticulously maintained. It's had oil changes 4 times a year with an average yearly mileage of roughly 3000 miles. The odds that this device has spontaneously broken without abuse or cause are exceedingly low.
Add to this the fact that my grandfather used to remember making a tool that served this purpose.
He, prior to getting a bit spotty in the head, was not in the practice of building special tools to perform functions that he already had tools to fill. If an ignition key served the function of resetting this device, he would not have built another tool to perform that function.
