Red lighting is actually a very good choice for preserving night vision. Most fire apparatus are equipped with both white and red interior lighting for this reason. But like blue, red lights have a distinct disadvantage: Any red printing on a map vanishes when the reds alone are used. Not sure about green, but the seasonal decorating value when combined with red can't be discounted.
