2nd Gen Service Indicators
Permalink

Okay, I checked and I don't have a really good shot of the "key slots" under the speedometer, but here's a shot of the speedo itself:
Now the issue is the three little green boxes at the bottom of the speedometer. These are meant to remind the owner to change the oil and such. They are really, really stupid.

First, all three trip at the same time (determined by mileage). So why you need three identical indicators with different labels is beyond me.

The problem is that mine have just turned yellow (which I could give two flips about except that it annoys me to look at them). The three little key slots that correspond to each of the three indicators perfectly fit the key that belongs to the car. This, I think, is more than coincidence.

However, putting a key in one of those slots does nothing. Putting one in the slot and the other in the ignition does nothing. Turning, jostling, or otherwise messing with the ignition key during this does nothing.

So I'm at a loss. My understanding based upon a memory over a decade old of my grandfather talking about this is that Honda has some special key the dealerships had that allowed them to reset these indicators (encouragement for owners to get the car serviced by Honda mechanics.) My grandfather, being a stickler for doing all his own auto repair, fashioned himself a replica of this special key.

Unfortunately for me, he's getting pretty old and anytime I ask him questions about the Honda I've got an equal chance of him giving the appropriate response for any vehicle he's ever owned. (When I was having trouble with the headlights not working he suggested I look for the nub-style brights switch on the floor of the car that was standard on very old American cars.)

Judging by my last visit to the dealership they can't answer too many questions about 2nd gens there without calling several dozen people all over the country. So I'm here.

Anyone know what this key I need is? If I could find even a photograph of one I could almost certainly build a replica.
